About SIMpowering
SIMpowering is an initiative born from the Master’s program in Strategy and International Management (SIM) at the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland. Driven by six highly motivated students from this program, the initiative aims to tackle pressing social issues and create sustainable, long-lasting impact.
Currently, SIMpowering focuses on combating period poverty in Tanzania. Every year, thousands of young girls miss school days due to a lack of access to basic menstrual products and knowledge about menstrual health. This issue, often compounded by cultural taboos, hinders their educational and professional potential.

Driving Change Through Education, Equality, and Well-being.
At SIMpowering, our mission aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) to create a lasting impact. By addressing Quality Education (SDG 4), Gender Equality (SDG 5), and Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3), we aim to break the barriers of period poverty
Our History
SIMpowering began its journey in 2020, initially named “PERIOD.” the project focused on tackling period poverty by distributing one million menstrual cups in Zimbabwe in partnership with the Menstrual Health Experts Fund.

In 2021, the initiative evolved to address new challenges. Collaborating with Femme International, the team organized educational workshops and distributed menstrual products in Kenya. Recognizing the importance of community awareness, they also implemented a local initiative at St. Gallen, providing free menstrual products in university restrooms to promote understanding of period poverty.

In 2022-2023, SIMpowering focused on building a strong partnership with the NGO She!Masomo. Based in Berlin, this project aimed to empower women in impoverished communities in Kenya through sexual and menstrual health education. The team contributed by developing marketing materials, pitch decks, and a budget plan to support the organization’s goals.

Our Project
This year, SIMpowering is dedicated to addressing period poverty in Tanzania by focusing its efforts on schools near Lake Victoria. Many girls in these communities face significant barriers to education due to a lack of access to menstrual hygiene products and the stigma surrounding menstruation. By combining education, access to essential resources, and community collaboration, this project aims to empower girls and create lasting change.

The initiative includes workshops for students, where both girls and boys will learn about menstrual health in an inclusive environment. These sessions aim to break taboos, foster understanding, and promote gender equality. Alongside education, SIMpowering will distribute reusable menstrual products to ensure girls can attend school consistently. To create long-term sustainability, the project also plans to provide tools like sewing machines and washing stations, enabling the local production and maintenance of menstrual products.
